Overview
This article explains how school staff determine whether damage to a student-issued Chromebook is considered intentional damage (vandalism) versus accidental damage. Understanding these distinctions helps ensure fair accountability and consistent device care expectations.
What is Vandalism?
Vandalism is any intentional, reckless, or avoidable action that causes damage to a Chromebook. Damage is classified as vandalism when it is not the result of normal use or an unavoidable accident.
Examples of Damage Classified as Vandalism
The following are common indicators that damage was intentional or preventable:
Screen Damage
• Screen damage caused by pressing hard objects (pens, pencils, chargers, etc.) against the display with puncture marks.
• Writing etched on glass.
Keyboard and Trackpad Damage
• Missing or deliberately removed keys
• Keys broken from prying, excessive force, or tampering
- Photo below shows removed trackpad and keyboard customization. Both considered intentional damage.

Physical Casing Damage
• Cracks, dents, or breaks to the outer shell from throwing, dropping intentionally, or striking the device
• Bent hinges or separated casing caused by forcing the device open or closed
• Stickers, carvings, writing, paint, or permanent markings on the device
- Photos below show damage to top case and stickers and both are considered intentional damage.

Port and Charger Damage
• Broken charging ports caused by forcing the charger at an angle
• Charger cords that are frayed, cut, or deliberately damaged (Chargers have no accidental damage protection and the replacement fine is $25.00)
• Intentionally inserting foreign objects into Chromebook ports. This can permanently damage the device, lead to a full replacement fine, and pose a safety hazard.
- Below is a photo of damage to the usb port of a chromebook by a nail being forcefully inserted.

Consequences of Vandalism
If damage is classified as vandalism:
- Replacement fee up to $364.00 may be charged to the student/family
- Disciplinary action may occur in accordance with school policy
- Repeated incidents may result in loss of device privileges
